Wednesday 19 September
On 19th September, renowned futurist, strategist and author Dr Peter Ellyard spoke to a networking breakfast at the Angliss Restaurant about future trends and planning for the new century with a specific focus on the hospitality, tourism and foods industries.
Dr Ellyard's presentation was extremely thought-provoking and asked the audience to strive towards making the future a better place through leadership. His presentation focussed on the need to create sustainable, mindful tourism, hospitality and food production practices based on creating a total system of 'Wellness'. He encouraged people within these industries to take a leadership role rather than merely managerial role in defining this future both on a local, and more importantly, global scale. He stressed the need for Australians to embrace Planetist Values and then, leading by example, export this knowledge to other developing nations.
Dr Peter Ellyard (BSc.Agr, MS, Ph.D) is currently Chairman of the Preferred Futures Institute and the Preferred Futures Group, which he founded in 1991. He also chairs the Sustainable Prosperity Foundation and two start up environmental companies. Peter Ellyard has been a Senior Adviser to the United Nations system for more than 30 years including to the 1992 Earth Summit where he was a senior advisor on both the climate change and biodiversity conventions. Of which he was the only Australian and one of only 20 globally. At other times he has been a senior consultant to the UNEP, UNDP and UNESCO. He has also advised the OECD for over 20 years. He is the author of the best selling book Ideas for the New Millennium (1998, 2001) and The Birth of Planetism (to be published in 2007).

It has been 38 years since this group commenced their Diploma of Catering and Hotel Management at what was previously known as the William Angliss Food Trades School.
On Friday 24th August the group was invited back to celebrate, reunite and reconnect at William Angliss Institute. The event was held in the Angliss Restaurant, following its first refurbishment since it opened during this group's third year of study at the Institute in 1971.
Hans van Roosendaal, head of the Reunion Committee said that "it was an extremely successful night and a wonderful opportunity to be reunited with former classmates. I appreciate all the effort that William Angliss Institute put into the evening and the student group working on the event looked after us very well. I couldn't have been happier and a special thank you to Katia and Kim in AGN for putting in an enormous amount of work to make the night special and run so smoothly."

Over 60 Angliss Global Network members and guests gathered for this special event on one of the biggest issues facing the hospitality, tourism and food industries. With low unemployment, a candidate-driven labour market, the restless energy of Generation Y workers, and widespread skill shortages, this issue of staff attraction and retention is increasingly critical, and businesses are seeking innovative ways to attract and retain the best talent.
Guests were able to hear from Stuart French, Team Development Manager with SalesForce, Sue Lord, Area Director of Human Resources (VIC/SA/WA) with InterContinental Hotels Group and Matteo Pignatelli, Owner of Matteo's Restaurant.
The event was a great opportunity to gain further insight into recruitment and retention activities from industry leaders who are involved in vastly different organisation environments and to gather a greater industry perspective on the issue. Guests really enjoyed the 'human' aspect of the panel and felt that they were able to compare and learn from the experiences of the panellists.
The panel concluded with Lucy Hooper, our Generation Y special guest who provided very valuable and thought provoking insights on staff recruitment and retention issues, with a focus on what motivates her unique generation. |
