Local Young People at Risk Benifit from Connections Program
'At risk' young people in the City of Casey, Greater Dandenong and Cardinia benefitted from an innovative Australian Government education and personal support program operated by William Angliss Institute.
Connections was officially launched in the Dandenong and South Eastern Melbourne region recently by the Hon. Anthony Byrne MP, Member for Holt & Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister.
Connections aims to assist disengaged young people between 13 to 19 years who are disconnected from mainstream schooling and are experiencing personal and social difficulties.
William Angliss Institute's Chief Executive, Nick Hunt said, "Eligible Connections participants receive education and training on a full-time or part time basis in a supportive and flexible community environment.
"They also receive career development and life management skills to help them achieve their personal goals and improve their future employability, plus a regularly updated Transition Plan and personal support throughout their training, and for at least three months after they complete the program."
Mike Grant, William Angliss Institute's Connections Coordinator, said the program allows students to maximise their exposure to other areas of hospitality and tourism rather than just cookery, and delivers a broader skill set.
"Educational programs include Certificates II in Hospitality Operations, Tourism Operations and Certificate I in Vocational Preparation that are combined into an integrated Hospitality and Tourism program," Mr Grant said.
A young Connections participant, Sam Borg, said it had helped him to stabilise what have been very disruptive life circumstances.
"Now I can concentrate on getting the job I want with confidence. I want a successful career and be able to improve myself so I can be independent and have a secure future," said Sam.
William Angliss Institute's Connections program is funded by the Australian Government. It is coordinated in partnership with the Uniting Church of Australia, which provides pastoral, mental health and youth crisis support while giving access to its chaplaincy and camping facilities in Grantville.
